Wax is fickle and so am I, apparently.

A big part of what is appealing to me about encaustic is the “happy accident” factor.   It is extremely hard for me to sketch and plan out a painting and execute it with absolute precision.  I just don’t want to, and I am totally ok with that.

The painting below was going to be black, yellow, and celadon.  It was going to have lots and lots of lines and dots and a smooth shiny surface.  That was the “plan.”

Somewhere along the way, the wax did something that changed my mind.

Five hours later, I had a white painting with flecks of gold that grows out its panel like coral and is covered with dots.

Wax melts, moves, is unpredictable, and most important, inspiring.   How wonderful is that?
